Clinch County land was part of Lowndes and Ware counties until 1850. The county owes its name to General Duncan Clinch who is credited with the defeat of Seminole Chief Osceola and who later served as a Georgia congressman.

The original county seat, Magnolia, has vanished from record. Homerville, the present seat of government, remembers Dr. John Homer Mattox who had helped lay out the town.
